NYCWP Voices

An unofficial social network for teachers in the New York City Writing Project

Hi Everyone,

I'm not completely finished with my multimedia project. I would have like to add pictures at the beginning but I didn't have the thought until the last minute...So, the beginning is quite text heavy and perhaps dense.

The project is in hypertextopia because it was easier for me to collect the info there than on tumblr. However, the link to the hypertextopia url has been pasted in tumblr. Enjoy!

I really like the way you turned a seemingly abstract question into a researchable topic by tying it to the role the subconscious plays in social violence. I often have students who want to research a question that is completely abstract and I often struggle with how to help them reconceive of their curiosity in a way that they will actually be able to research. I will have to remember this topic and use your method of tying an abstract concept to real events so that I will be better able to help students in the future--thanks Sonali! What a powerful, interesting, and important topic to focus on. Will you use this with students?

Your use of imagery via poetry and video was extremely powerful. At times I feel like a refugee, at times I feel I have no connection to the very country I was born. The Black experience in America has been one of dual consciousness. Can you imagine that? I can totally relate to the conscious and subconscious and it's battle. I read a rather profound book entitled The Souls of Black Folk by W.E.B. Dubios that speaks so candidly of the consciousness of black people in American history. I am aware of the oppressed become the oppressor mentality as well. that you spoke of. It is important to teach our students to become more conscious of the world around them both locally and internationally. I will take it a step further to see where they fit in the world and how they can be a part of change. You indeed can do this through the arts! Hooray for you and it was a wonderful Voice thread.
