NYCWP Voices

An unofficial social network for teachers in the New York City Writing Project

To be a transparent learner, a term I heard from Julie C. mentioned this morning and in other occasions, is something I did not give further thought until this morning. "A life-long learner" is a term we all are familiar with, and that is also a goal that we want our students become; whereas a transparent learner seems to be a new concept. It is not really new. It is about know what you know and know what you don't know and admit that's all you know. But why it is hard to admit that sometimes? Yes, no teacher can say he or she knows everything in the content area he/she will teach. A certain level of confidence is needed. I just think a mutual trust and respect can be the key to build up a transparent learner. Yes, I wish all our schools and administrators understand this and are willing to be transparent learner, too.

"mutual trust and respect can be the key to build up a transparent learner" I think that's the key. No one minds showing what they don't know when they are comfortable that they won't be ridiculed or punished. But making learning transparent works for everyone. Sometimes we don't realize what we don't know until we try to make our knowledge visible to others. So, we have to go back an fix that, "relearn" what's missing.
Each of us are limited in what we can master. If we know one or two things really well that is an accomplishment.

Transparency seems to be key for good management. I have the same wish as you. Administrators and teachers (including me) should be transparent in order to continually learn and help themselves and society progress.
