Take a Tumblr Tour of My Investigation of Social Networking

My Tumblr Exhibit explores the question: How can I best use social networking tools to accomplish my personal and professional goals? With that question in mind, this portfolio moves from my general musings on the impact I feel social networking can have on my relationship with my fellow school community members (Text, Video); to what resources I used to gain more information on how social networking--particularly Nings--can help create a viable learning community (Link, Chat); to more in-depth… Continue

Afternoon Day 10: Final Product Woes

Well, I started working on my final product, and I'm having some difficulties. I first put a question on Twitter to create my chat modality, but no one has responded yet. Then, I looked back at my looped writing piece and tried to decide what would be useable and what is not. I decided that I liked my quote and its explanation, as well as some parts of my dialogue, and so I thought I could combine these, with some editing, to create my text. So, I worked on that for a while and I think it is alm… Continue

Morning Day 10: Not so info overloaded

I did more research last night, and I feel less info overloaded. I realized that on Google Reader, I don't have to look at all of the RSS feeds for a search at once--I can look at the blog results, the news results, the podcast results, etc. separately, and for me, that is a lot less overwhelming. I sent a few things that I found to Tumblr, but I felt apprehensive and self-conscious in doing so. I guess I felt that others would look at what I had sent and wonder why I had chosen those pieces to… Continue

Afternoon Day 9: Google Reader

I set up my account in Google Reader, and started subscribing to feeds, and I feel a bit information overloaded. I now need to spend some time going through the feeds I subscribed to, but it seems overwhelming because they will just keep piling in automatically while I'm trying to look through the old ones. For someone who likes to take my time sorting and sifting through information, and who has to look at all the information that is presented to me, this seems like it will become an unwieldy t… Continue

My NYCWP Journey...and Beyond

Over the past couple of weeks, probably one of the biggest lessons I've learned is the importance of using online tools to communicate and collaborate with others. I purposely use the general term "others" here because as I discovered through this Institute, insight and support can come from a variety of sources, not just those individuals who are directly related to your specific field. From our ninging, blogging, and twittering, I began to see the immense benefit of being able to share and rec… Continue

Reflection on Process of Creating VoiceThread

I wrote my VoiceThread story first in Microsoft Word, and then recorded it on the web site. For written comments, I just wrote a short caption for each picture to give some context for the image and to invite/entice visitors to listen to my story and join in the conversation my story initiates. When writing my story, I continually looked back at my image and tried to express the most important memories, thoughts, and feelings the photo evoked in me and to explain the primary reason why I chose… Continue

Morning Day 7: Communities within Communities

I just lost the blog I had typed, so I'm just going to give a quick summary here: Shared with group this morning that one of things I found in book was using social networks to foster communities within communities Want to use this idea in my school to encourage staff to use technology to communicate with one another and to build a greater sense of cohesion/community overall My frustrations/hesitations with setting up such a community is that many of my staff won't participate--group reassure… Continue

Afternoon Day 6: VoiceThreads--Writing versus Talking

I wrote this post before I left Lehman today, but due to technical difficulties it wouldn't publish--thanks for trying Paul! So I will try to recreate my thoughts here. I was initially unsure of how I would be able to determine what content to type and what content to record as I began developing my VoiceThread. But once I got started, it was much easier than I had anticipated to make these decisions. I'm also not that familiar with writing a recording script, but I've been having fun playing ar… Continue

Morning Day 6

In our breakfast book discussion, the topic of collaboration between teachers and librarians arose, which is an issue that is near and dear to my heart. I am continually trying to collaborate with teachers in my school to support their instructional practices, and I do have a few success stories, but that is by far not the norm. As Julia, Aileen, and I all lamented, what usually happens is that a teacher comes the day before they want to use the library for a lesson, tell you want they want you… Continue

Afternoon Day 5--What to think of Twitter

I feel like we learned a lot of new stuff today--how to use Twitter and VoiceThreads. I'm not sure what to think about Twitter. I can see how its instantaneousness can make it a useful tool for social networking. However, I was a bit put off by the whole following thing. I searched for possible networkees on topics of interest to me, but I couldn't really find anyone that I felt comfortable following. I ended up not following anyone outside of the NYCWP group. I know that following them just mea… Continue

Too Much to Do, Too Little Time

Or I should say, too much I want to do. I had plans to get so much done this weekend in preparation for this week's institute. I wanted to read everyone's hypertextopia stories and write comments; I wanted to reply to the commenters on my story; I wanted to add shards to my own story; and I wanted to read a substantial portion of the book I snagged on Thursday--A Whole New Mind by Daniel Pink. But, as usual, life got in the way. I have an interview tomorrow and I spent a good porti… Continue

Day 4, Afternoon: The Hypertextopia Writing Process

Being a writer again started easy and ended hard--which always seems to be the case for me. It was easy to brainstorm ideas and settle in on the cluster of thoughts I wanted to explore. It was then fairly easy to start writing about each of those thoughts, I think especially since in this program the small boxes make the starting process less intimidating. I would look at the boxes and think I just have to fill up this little box with some details about this memory, and I was excited to jump in… Continue

Become a Hypertextopic with my Story!

If you would like to check out a new way of reading and interacting with someone's deep, dark memories, take a look at my Hypertextopia story that probes the problematic relationship I had with my grandmother: Or, if you prefer, you can start reading from a map view of the story. Enjoy! And, please share any questions, comments, or other feedback by commenting on this blog post. Continue

Morning Day 4: Relief

I worked on my hypertextopia story last night and this morning, yet I was still worried that I would not be able to get it to the point I would want it to be at for publishing. But, by sharing my concern in my blog post yesterday and with Julie this morning, and receiving feedback, I feel much better now. I'm realizing that I can push aside my desire for my writing to be perfect and focus more on exploring this new and different writing format as a learner and thinking more about how I can play… Continue

Afternoon--Day 3

I'm feeling a bit behind and a bit worried that my Hypertextopia story is not going to get to the point I want it to by publishing time. This is a problem that tends to plague my life. I am a perfectionist and I could work on projects, mainly writing ones, forever and still not feel that they are adequately finished. I think that I need to learn how to make a goal for myself for each project I start, work my best towards achieving that goal, and then stop working on the piece when I feel I have… Continue

Morning Day 3

I found our breakfast discussion to be fascinating--I love thinking about different types of literacy formats and how they affect our interaction with text and the reading experience as a whole. It makes me think of the Choose Your Adventure series I loved reading as a kid. As an avid reader, these books were great because not only did it empower the reader to make decisions about where the story would go, but it also expanded the reading experience--you now got about five books for the price of… Continue

Play Time Day Two

Today I once again was reminded of my love-hate relationship with research. As I discussed in my morning blog post, I wanted to explore some other nings that have similar usage goals as my own so that I can decide first of all, whether or not a ning would be the best type of social network for my needs/objectives and secondly, if I decide to create a ning, what is the best way to go about it. But, I found that when I went to a few different nings, I really didn't get that much insight into wheth… Continue

Morning Day Two

Our breakfast discussion really got me thinking about how I can be more collaborative in my practice. Yesterday, I immediately created my own ning, not really thinking about how it might be more beneficial to explore other nings that exist and see if I could learn from what others have done, and possibly join up with others who have similar projects/goals. I tend to be a rather independent person, and so it didn't even occur to me to seek out others before jumping in on my own. But, if I'm going… Continue
