I could probably sit here all day doing this research. There's just so much out there, and so much I want to learn about my topic. I'm finding that the more I search, they more questions open up and the more I want to know. I think I'm going to need to revisit this morning's loop writing to refocus myself and my search.
I think that's an important point to remember about taking students through the research process - that managing research is a task in itself and in order to make research manag… Continue
Did anyone see Josh Hamilton hit those 28 home runs in the first round of the All-Star Home Run Derby last night? Man ... what a performance!
He was last to bat in the line-up. I think there were five or six batters before him, and by the time he stepped up to bat, the top score of home runs was 8. He went on to hit 28. 28! At one point, I believe he hit 17 home runs in a row. In-cred-ible.
This is the guy people have been talking about in the news lately. I believe the story goes that when he… Continue
I am so uncomfortable right now.
This is the anxiety that motivated me to take this class in the first place.
It's very strong and ugly right now, and I'm feeling extremely anxious and frustrated.
Perhaps I'm just on information overload, but there is just so much information out there in the world. I think it's really difficult because when navigating these on-line sources, you really have to be skilled at several things simultaneously. First, you need the time, the interest, and the intellige… Continue
Hi everyone. Like Beth, one of the things I've found interesting about the last two weeks is the collaborative nature of Web 2.0 tools - the way they can be used to communicate across (or within groups or with individuals outside of your own network and across the country for that matter). I'm thinking particularly about the ning here. I'd like to do more thinking about the ways in which I can use a ning in my own workshop series or graduate courses with teachers to build community in a building… Continue
This was so much fun! And it really combines so many different skills. I love that the learning was so layered. First, it's visual; second, there's a writing component; third, it incorporates such an interesting technological program; and fourth, you get the… Continue

Ah, the joys of technology. I was about 2/3 of the way through my blog post when the computer updated and automatically shut down. And I really want to get to Voice Thread, so I'm going to make this short and sweet.
I was left thinking about the last segment of our morning conversation - the question that Beth brought up about community and how we can use on-line tools to do this. On page 33, the author outlines the benefits of a "professional learning community" (as opposed to more traditional… Continue
I'd like to write something happy and inspirational this morning - some kind of lovely quotation I read in a book this morning on the train. But Paul said to "just be where you are right now" and to write what's on my mind. Plus, I didn't read on the train this morning. I was writing - something I was working on yesterday afternoon and should have finished. But that plan went awry. Along with the entire beginning of this week I think.
It was a strange and eerily quiet Fourth of July weekend. Ex… Continue

Wow, so much has happened in my head today. I suppose I'll just begin to list some of the things that stand out:
Julia's great analogy in our last conversation about Hypertextopia. She said "I'm a digital immigrant." Whereas our students are "digital natives." Awesome line.
The power of writing - no matter where we do it. I read two stories of my classmates. Each piece was so intricate and moving and full of learning. I was transfixed and transported. I am sure that these stories, their images… Continue
Welcome to my teeny writing space on this great big, world-wide-wonder.
Here's the link to my story:
"Landslide"My Map
So, I'm taking this class in technology and writing, and our instructors "made us" use this super-new site called Hypertextopia. And although I'm a techo-phobe, I've experimented anyway. What I've found is that this is kind of an interesting site, one whe… Continue
First, my question: Can anyone recommend some literature - articles, books, sites - that speaks to the multi-tasking discussion we had this morning. Many of you mentioned that "kids today" are able to work and in fact focus better when they are multi-tasking. Paul mentioned that this was a generational difference, as this is essentially how kids exist in the world today, that they are essentially "raised" to do this in our culture and that what we perceive as being "information overload" is in f… Continue
I thinking that my frustrations right now have a lot less to do with the technology aspect of this project and a lot more to do with the writing part. Although writing generally comes easy to me, I'm always reminded that the process is so difficult. I find myself struggling over the story itself. What is the story? What's the larger story? Which bit do I want to focus on? Where are the links to the larger pieces? Why is this important? What has it meant to me? Where are the patterns and themes?… Continue
I was thinking this morning: my favorite thing about the Lehman College campus - besides the grass and the beautiful gothic buildings - are the quotations engraved in the stones that line the entry from the parking lot. I've seen them several times before, but I've been reminded of how wonderful they are for the last three days. I sat on the bench near them and had lunch on Monday and Tuesday, and today, I encountered them from a different direction as I walked back from the parking lot.
I've a… Continue
I just love the word: Hypertextopia. It conjures up so many images and associations. The most vivid for me is the text and the topia, and that's what I'm sort of feeling right now. I just went back and reread what I wrote earlier, and for a few moments, I was transported back to that time and place and simultaneously to another place - to a present place of reflection. It was quasi-meditative. A kind of utopia or a euphoria, rather, found through the writing process. It's nice.
Although the 'hy… Continue

Although Paul said that this is an open freewrite, I still feel somewhat compelled to say something related to the class. I'm curious to know what today will bring. I was thinking yesterday as I rode the train home about how many of us experienced frustration yesterday. I was reminded about how integral initial frustrations are in the learning process - how learning often begins with questions and experimentation and yes, frustration. Who was that theorist who said that all learning begins with… Continue
One thing that stands out most to me is the use or creation of the Avetar. Paul made an interesting point earlier - he said something about "making conscious the decisions that teenagers are making," which really made me think. And I guess this goes back to my original biases about technology and social networking; really, it goes to my biases toward society. One of the reasons I don't like the increasing presence of technology in our culture is because I find it a bit superficial and disconnect… Continue
