The Final Multimedia Experience "Tumblr"

This final project was great! I focused my project on my journey to Ancient Egypt which is a place that has fascinated me since childhood. I managed to get through all of the tools of Tumblr (chats, video, texts, audio, photo, quote, and links). I worked hard and I prevailed! This was a wonderful way of getting used all types of formats. I hope when I get back to school in September I will remember most of what I learned this summer. It was truly an eye opening experience for me. I learned about… Continue

Confidence & Clarity When Teaching Technology Tools

"The most effective teacher will always be biased, for the chief force in teaching is confidence and enthusiasm. Joyce Cary When you enter any classroom you should have not only a confidence about yourself personally but also confidence about the content area you are about to teach. That is not saying you should know absolutely everything about the topic but it is saying you are comfortable enough to present the content to anyone one on any level in an effective way. In order to have this level… Continue

Google Reader and Tumblr

I would think these both of these tools would come very natural for me as a Librarian, but quite the opposite. Google Reader took a while for me to figure out and I'm still not sure if I am quite doing it the correct way or not. Tumblr was a lot simpler to user for me. Using Google News and Google Reader I found pertinent articles but having so many articles is rather overwhelming. Is there a way to limit the number possible by using boolean operators or being more specific. I decided that my se… Continue

My NYC Writing Project Summer Journey Thus Far

My role as a School Media Specialist is purely one of referral and demonstration. Meeting with students on various levels throughout the day can be a bit challenging when comes to deciding what is the best technology tools for everyone. I meet with individual students, teacher lead classes of students and students that are a part of our library and poetry clubs. So far, I believe I found a two wonderful tools that lend itself to precisely those various levels of usage. Tools such as Voicethread… Continue

Writing Project Day 7

Today, I would like to share a wonderful experience I had with a group of freshman level students on my campus. This past school year, I collaborated with a ninth grade ELA teacher in order to help her students improve their information literacy skills. I was introduced to the program T.R.A.I.L.S. (Tool for Real Time Assessment of Information Literacy Skills) from New Visions for Public Schools. This tool is basically a knowledge assessment which gives students multiple-choice style questions th… Continue

Voice Thread Day 2

I really enjoyed telling my narrative using Voice Thread. I was able to complete narratives on three pictures so far that I plan to use for my project. I did not have a chance to record my voice as of yet but I plan to do that tomorrow. I liked being able to write out the story first before I read it. This allowed me to think deeply about the picture and reflect on the true essence of its history in more detail. Voice thread--Love it! Continue

TEXT DISCUSSION (WRITING PROJECT DAY 6)

In reading the class text, I have read about a great many ways that can improve technology usage in the classroom. As a librarian, I am constantly baffled by how many teachers and administrators take on the assumptive role that all students need is a classroom or library with technology access. They forget that technology like every other instructional aide requires a foundation and the teaching of effective usage of technology is of great importance. In my opinion copying, pasting, searching go… Continue

Day 5 Overview

Today, I really enjoyed using the two new technological/writing tools. The first tool was "Twitter" and the second was Voicethread." I did a little twitting and would have loved to have more time to find other people with more in common. I can already see that I will really like to use voicethread. I've been on a geneaological quest for a few years now and I can really see this website lending itself to that. I have pictures of my great great grandparents that I would love to share with family a… Continue

DAY 5 Back to the Writing Board

Over the 4th of JuIy break I had a chance to reflect on all that I learn last week. In just four days I was taught and familiarized myself with so many technology tools that I can honestly say I would feel confident enough to share with my colleagues at school or even a class of students. We really have been learning some great tools for the classroom. As a Librarian a part of our job is to share information about the latest technology available that will help out classroom teachers. This is a w… Continue

3 Days of Hypertextopia

I finally feel like I have grasped Hypertextopia! I was able to do so many things; I added graphics, I added shard, I published my work on the site and finally I was able to link it to my ning page. Traditionally, I usually start out any writing piece with a clean sheet of looseleaf paper so that I can brainstorm ideas. Being thrown right into typing a memory chain on hypertextopia was a little different for me. Several times I had to go back to my work and check for grammatical errors and if ea… Continue

Invitation to read Julia Loving's story "The Smell of Gardenia"

I would like to invite everyone to read my hypertext story The Smell of Gardenia. I really had a great time writing this story. It brought back some memories of travel, family, military life and marriage. I hope you will enjoy reading it. Continue

Reflections, Day 3

It has been a while since I had someone critique my writing. Beth did a wonderful job at critiquing my Memory Chain. She was very thorough and helpful. She gave me some real constructive criticism that I will definitely use to make my memory chain that much stronger. I realize that I make more spelling and grammatical error when I am freely typing in comparison when I am writing in a notebook. I would guess some of our students would have the same problems. I tell my students, to re-read their w… Continue

Hypertextopia- Day Two

The overall experience I've had with Hypertextopia has been easy but at the same time I realize that I am more comfortable using pen and paper. I found that I had more than one theme in my memory chain and that is fine, I just hope when the reader reads it they will be coherent to the historical timelines. Continue

Hypertextopia- First Response

This is an awesome way to create technology based projects. As I began reading the text "Reinventing Project-Based Learning" I noted that there is constant mentioning of teachers having effective technology based projects. I can see students being very receptive to this application because it lends itself to various things. Students can organize their thoughts, expand their ideas, ponder the world around them and most of all learn. On the other side of the fence, I was able to dive right into it… Continue

My Open Mic Poetry Club

Back in September, I decided to start an Open Mic Poetry Club. Traditionally in the Library we do Read Alouds in celebration of National Poetry Month etc. Not only do I like to write poetry but I also love to read and listen to it. I especially love to read love poetry and ethnic poetry. I thought starting an Open Mic Club it would be a great way to channel all of the extra energy students have when they come into the library during lunch periods. Because I do not have enough space in the Librar… Continue

Impressions of the 1st Day

The first word that comes to mind about my first day participating in the NYC Writing Project would definitely be “INVIGORATING”. Technology has always inspired me to go beyond all that I know. I have great hopes that this technology would do the same for the very students I service everyday. If indeed we can constantly satisfy and invoke their curiosity than we have succeeded. Today was truly a great experience for me. I learned so much jargon as well as loads of hands-on experience. I already… Continue
